Getting wisteria to bloom

Wisteria is a hard plant to get to bloom, but boy are the blooms pretty and plentiful when they come!

A Wisteria bloom A Wisteria bloom

To start, Wisteria must fully establish its roots before it will start blooming. This can take up to six years. If your Wisteria has been planted less than six years, that is probably the primary reason for lack of blooms.

Secondly, Wisteria needs a good amount of direct sun to bloom. If your Wisteria is in a shady area, it simply will not bloom.

Lastly, and most importantly, is to prune, prune, prune. I don't think it's possible to over-prune a Wisteria. In the summer, when the plant is growing like crazy, prune it every month. Aggressively. This will shock your Wisteria and cause it to bloom.
