Softball Pitching Tips - Routines
1. Pitching Routine: In sport psychology, a great deal is put on establishing routines to help the athlete be in control of the situation. Every person gets prepared differently though and so it's important that the coach know what his pitcher's routine is on the day of the game. Some pitchers take a good hour to get warm and others will take 20 minutes. A pitcher has to get, from the coach, what she needs to pitch the game. Routines are important to the athletes and it's crucial that no one interferes with that routine. A pitcher has to get her way in order to get prepared as long as it doesn't disturb the team or someone else's routine.
2. Handing Over the Ball: Some pitchers will have the game ball handed to them by the coach before she warms up and is asked if she wants to pitch that game. Then the pitcher and coach have to discuss goals for the game and anything else the pitcher wants to talk about. These are crucial moments because it helps the pitcher have a routine before each game, and if the coach chooses to go about handing over the game ball each day the same way every game then the pitcher can count on that moment. A pitcher has in her mind a way she does things before each game. The coach should be involved in these moments before the game and together with the pitcher create that moment where they are in control and can make their plan for the upcoming competition.
3. Relief: A pitcher needs to know that she won't be on her game every day and when it's not her day the coach will give another pitcher a chance to make it her day on the mound. A pitcher should not take it personally when she gets pulled from a game. The change is made because maybe somebody else will get the opponent out at that time in the game.
