Softball Fielding Tips - Outfield Troubleshooting
1. Misses the mark with throws: When players throw the ball from the outfield with a sidearm motion or they don't come over the top, they put side spin on the ball, which makes it tail off either to the left or right and miss the target. Players need to come over the top to produce balls with backspin that go straighter. If an outfielder doesn't grip the ball across the seams her throws may be wild also.
2. Gets Poor Jumps: On balls hit over an outfielder's head, they often react by backpedaling, which they should not do. Players have to practice the drop step so they can actually get to balls more quickly and get better looks at the ball in the air.
3. Has trouble building up speed to pursue balls: The outfielders who run after the fly balls with their glove already in a catching position end up hurting their chances of making the play, because this kind of running slows them down. The outfielders have to learn to keep their gloves at waist level during their pursuits, only raising them when they are ready to make the catch.
4. Takes bad angles on balls hit in the gap: During practice sessions, an outfielder should experiment with less-aggressive angles to balls that are hit in the gap. Over time, the outfielder will start to get a sense of choosing the right angles during the heat of the action of game day.
