Put off optional purchases
If you are going to be making a big-ticket purchase that is optional: a new TV, stereo, Blu-ray player, GPS, etc. Try holding off for 30 days first. If after 30 days you still feel like you want/need the item, then buy it. Putting in a cooling-off period gives you a chance to reconsider if you *really* need something. This can help you avoid unnecessary purchases and save you money.
