Find north without a compass

To find approximately where north is when you don't have a compass you can use your watch. Hold your watch flat at point the hour hand towards the sun. If the sun is very high in the sky, this is most easily done by finding the direction of shadows on the ground, and then pointing the hour hand in the other direction. North is the approximately half way between the hour hand and 12 o'clock.
