Recover lost passwords in Vista

Windows Vista has a pretty nice feature that allows you to create a disk that will let you recover lost passwords. To use it though, you need to create the recovery disk now, while you can still remember your passwords. Here's how to go about creating and using such a disk.

To create the disk:

- Go to Control Panel and select User Accounts.

- In the Users Accounts window click on, um, User Accounts.

- In the second User Accounts window, click on "Create a password reset disk" under the Tasks section on the left side of the window.

- This will start the Forgotten Password wizard. Just follow the steps through the wizard and make sure you select an external media (such as a CD-ROM or a USB drive, you can even use an iPod, on which to store the results).

To use the disk:

- At the login screen, enter an incorrect password.

- Once you make an invalid attempt at logging in, there will be a link to "Reset password...". Click on it.

- This will start the Password Reset Wizard. The wizard itself is pretty easy, you just need to point it to the location of the file that was created previously and it'll do the rest which will allow you to reset your password.
