You need to be really careful when you are moving faces around on the iPhoto '09 corkboard. It's really easy when you are moving a face to drop it onto another face already on the corkboard. If you do this it will erase all the tags for the person being moved. If this happens, hit Command + Z at once and this will undo your accidental merging of the faces.
