Crack passwords legally
Elcomsoft sells software that will crack passwords on a wide variety of programs. Of course, they don't refer to it as cracking, they think of it in terms of password recovery. They offer programs that will crack passwords on PDF files, Microsoft Office products, zip and archive files, Intuit files (scary, since these tend to involve finances), Lotus SmartSuite products, and many more.
In most cases, you can buy such a program for under $100. And it's legal! At least, it's legal to buy it anyway, not so sure about the usage.
While I am sure that there are perfectly legitimate uses for this type of software, there doesn't seem to be any sort of mechanism in place to ensure that it is used as intended. Beware if you think your passwords on your machine can protect you.
