How to manage outsourced web development work?

The decision to outsource web development work is a strategic one given the importance and the reach of the Internet in today’s world. And it sure does not come cheap, as the time and efforts involved in getting a worthwhile web development work done means a serious expense. Needless to say, if you as a company is looking at outsourcing your web development work to a web solutions provider, you need to be extra cautious to ensure that you get the best quality of work done and delivered within the stipulated time.
This requires serious and sustained involvement on your part as you know your business requirements and processes best. Web development outsourcing companies working in another part of the world, no matter how big or experienced, cannot give you full value for your money without your own inputs and supervision.
Having said that, I must also add that your involvement as a client should not only be limited to providing the outsourcing company with your requirements and inputs. You should also actively monitor the project regarding the quality of the work being done at various stages and whether the deadlines are being met. Here are steps you can take to manage your web development project successfully.

Step 1

Estimate your requirements accurately

As mentioned above, you have the best knowledge of your needs, future plans, vision and what exactly you want for your web development work. Keeping this in mind and given the importance of Internet and the cost of re-works, you need to be involved with your project wholeheartedly, and not simply sit on the fence.
Suppose you want a web site made, you should know what purpose your web site would serve in your broad business plan. If it would serve only as an online booklet, you can go for a boutique web developer who may not have big teams but is high on creativity.
If it is an e-commerce web site, you should look for a vendor who has long experience in constant maintenance. In short, you should be attentive about your needs and future growth plan to decide about the vendor.

Step 2

Find and assess the vendor

Finding a vendor is not difficult. The tricky part lies in correctly assessing the vendors on the following parameters:
- Whether their capabilities and skillsets are best suited to meet your requirements. You would need to inquire about the employees of the vendor in the technological domain where your project figures and assess their expertise and experience with relevance to the specifications of your project.
- Whether they are stringent about meeting deadlines. Contact previous clients and take their feedback on this.
- Whether the vendor would be willing to sign and stick to the service level agreement (SLA). Again former clients will be the best source to provide information in this regard.

Step 3

Finalize a budget

Just like any normal project the web development outsourcing work should also have a well thought out budget. Make provision for contingencies in the budget, though the vendor should be encouraged, monitored and persuaded to remain within the budget. This approach will help minimize the reworks.

Step 4

Define the goal every week

Long journeys are easily traveled if smaller milestones are achieved on the way. Any project management works on the same lines. So sit with vendor and divide the lifecycle of the web development process into smaller weekly milestones and make sure that these mini-goals are achieved.

Step 5

Utilize the time difference

There would invariably a time difference if the vendor is based overseas. This time difference can be utilized positively in web development projects as the time gained can be used for communication and ironing out issues faced by the development team.

Step 6

If there are issues, alert everyone in time

Like any other typical project, you might face snarls in an outsourced web development project. The best strategy to counter the effects of the minor glitches is to have in place a fast-response framework where everyone connected to the project is made aware of the issues as early as possible. The best time to deal with such issues is at their earliest stage or they can become a real pain.
