show additional info when in the Finder icon view

If you use the icon view in the Mac Finder, there's a setting you can configure that lets you see additional information about certain file types. For folders, it'll show you the number of object in a folder and for audio or video files it'll show you the length of play time for the file.

To enable this, from the Finder go to View -> Show View Options. Then check the box next to Show Item Info. When you check this box, it'll only apply to the current folder. If you want this to apply to all folders, press the Use as Defaults button in the bottom of the panel.

If you do not see the Show Item Info checkbox, it's probably because you are not in the icon view in the Finder. The view options change based on the type of view used. And this option is only available when you are in the icon view.
