2. get ring or jade object
3. Place jade object in the water
4. If it sinks its jade. If it floats its fake

Wouldn't the weight of the ring itself have an effect on the ring floating or sinking?

Yeah, agreed. If jade sinks, that sounds like a reasonable test. But if you attach something that floats to something that sinks (like a ring), it seems pretty likely that in the case of a ring, the wntire assembly will sink.

You should be able to see thru jade. The better the jade the more clear. It's not window clear but opaque clear.
