Inserting dowels easily
If you have trouble inserting your dowels, the problem may be air trapped in the hole. If the air has no way out, the pressure in the hole builds up and the dowel will not go in all the way.
To get around this, cut a slit along the length of the dowel so that the air can get out. Make sure you clamp the dowel when you are cutting it, otherwise you are sure to end up with some cut-up fingers.
