Picking a bottle of wine (for the absolute beginner)
If you are hopeless when it comes to wine, here are a couple tips that will serve you well in most cases. They aren't fool-proof, but they are simple to remember.
- The color of the wine should match the color of the food. Having beef, pasta with red sauce, or some other red meat? Choose a red wine. Having chicken, fish, pork, or pasta with a white sauce? Choose a white wine.
- If you are picking a red wine, select a Merlot or a Pinot Noir. These are safe bets in that most people like them, and they tend to be consistently good across wineries.
- If you are picking a white wine, select a Pinot Blanc or a Chardonnay. Again, these are the safe bets.
- Never spend more than $15. You're guessing, why make an expensive mistake?
