Get a carbon monoxide detector
If you have either natural gas or propane in your house, you should have a carbon monoxide detector. Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of combustion (from your water heater, stove, or furnace) that is completely odorless, colorless, and not detectable in any way by humans. And it can kill you.
My next door neighbor was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning.
They are slightly more expensive (around $50) than smoke detectors, but ask yourself if your life is worth that much... cause that's what you are risking if you don't have a carbon monoxide detector in your house.
