fixing scratched DVDs
If you own a DVD that skips, there are services that can repair them for you like www.azuradisc.com. The inexpensive repair kits at electronics stores work well on light scratches...the kind that do not make DVDs skip!
If you rent a DVD that skips, you can sometimes repair it temporarily with dish soap or Windex. Make sure you do not wipe in a circle, but from the inside to the outside of the disc in a straight line. Make sure the disc is dry before you put it in the player!
Long-term, the way to fix this is to demand the same kind of quality control from the DVD rental industry that you expect from everyone else! They need to inspect the discs before they rent them and give us a guarantee that the disc will play. These guys (www.checkflix.com) have figured out how to check any disc for playability in less than 5 seconds. Every store should have one right next to their cash register. There is no reason you should have to endure scratched-rental-DVD trauma again.

I can't even go back to the store that night, have to go on-line, request a replacement, then wait for the mail-person. When you want to know whodunit, it's agonizing.
