With the price of small digital cameras plummeting, many of them now do not offer an optical viewfinder. It think it's a mistake to buy a camera without one though. The problem is that the LCD screen gets washed out in bright sunlight. So if you plan on taking pictures outside make sure you get a camera with an optical viewfinder.
