Disable backspace key on Firefox

Firefox 2 has an annoying new "feature" in that if you hit the backspace key, it acts as if you hit the back button on the browser. While I can imagine cases in which this would be useful, in practice it turns out to be really annoying. Often, when I go to the address bar to edit a URL and I start hitting the back key, if I failed to get the cursor in the address bar correctly, I am now taken back several pages in my browsing history. Man I hate this.

Luckily, this behavior can be modified. Here's how:

1 - In the address bar type: about:config.

2 - Scroll down to the entry called browser.backspace_action.

3 - Double-click on this row and it will pop up a dialog box asking you to enter a value. The current value will be 0, change it to be 2 then click OK.

That's all there is to it

Are you kidding, I can't stand when Backspace doesn't go back a page!

I always use shortcut keys so being able to back up without using the mouse was a godsend for me. However, the latest update of FF2 seems to have completely broken my browser's ability to backspace without crashing and it seems to have carried over into FF3 as well (it's gotten so bad that every time I hit backspace, the darn thing crashed). So, basically, thanks for showing me how to disable the backspace feature, I think it will really help at least cut down how often I have to restart! :D

Just as an aside, you can also enter a value of "1" for this parameter. If you do, the backspace key then acts as a "page up" command on the current page and holding Shift + Backspace will act as a "page down" in the current page. Not sure why anyone would want to do this, but just throwing it out there in case anyone else is wondering what functionality exists between 0 and 2 (adding values higher than 2 just keeps the backspace key disabled).

Thank you so much for this. This has to be one of the most annoying features of Firefox. Great tip!

You are now my hero. I can't begin to say how often the 'back' thing has happened, usually after writing a very long and wordy comment. Thank you so much!

It doesn't work for Firefox 3. Is there a solution for it?

This is working for me in Firefox 3.

This is awesome...to many accidental backspace hits. User Alt+Left Arrow to go back instead!

Thanks for this tip. I've written some rather long commentary on some sites lately and somehow the !#$!@$ cursor always seems to find it's way out of the text box when I move to edit something (using a touchpad) and I damned near put my fist through my LCD this afternoon when it did it again and I lost my post. again, THANKS!!

Thank christ for that

THANK YOU. That has to be the most annoying 'feature' yet implemented.

I always change this. It's an absolute pain if you accidentally click away from the "quick reply" field in a vBulletin forum and then hit backspace to make a correction - only to see it go back one page and lose your entire post... it should be disabled by default - stupid 'feature'.

great tip!
and for keyboard-shortcutters, you can still use alt left and right arrows to go back and forth through pages.

Thank you...typing in low light on a new laptop and I keep hitting that damn key by accident...now it doesn't mater.

Gah.. thank you! I was getting really frustrated with this. Pressing ctrl-F to search for stuff and making a mistake while writing the search string caused me going back in history although I just wanted to correct the darn error. It was really giving me the grey hair, obvious bug.
