How to tell how far away lightning is

To tell how far away lightning is from you, start counting seconds once you see the lightning. Stop when you hear the start of the thunder from that lightning strike. Whatever number you have, divide it by 5 to get the number of miles or 3 to get the number of kilometers from you to the lightning.
