Getting rid of ants
If you have an ant problem in your garden, there is a non-toxic solution to the problem. The answer is a powder called Diatomacious Earth. Diatomacious Earth is a powder made of the fossilized remains of plankton. When the powder is sprinkled on a bug that has an exoskeleton, ants fall into this category, it gets caught between their little exoskeleton joints and shreds them up until they die. It's non-toxic, although it can irritate the lungs, so you a painter's mask when you apply it.
To use it, find the ant nest and sprinkle about a cup of the Diatomacious Earth around the hole. Some key things to remember are that you do not want to do this when it is windy. Also, it needs to be dry. If the powder gets wet it clumps together and won't work.
Give the ants a day or so to tromp through the stuff and get it in their nest. After the powder has done its job, rinse it with water so that it doesn't stick around and cause harm to beneficial bugs.
