Tips for selling things on Craigslist
After many years of selling items on Cragislist, here are some tips that will help you sell items quickly and easily on Craigslist with the minimum amount of hassle.
1) Offer very detailed descriptions with as much information as possible. Think about the questions you would be asking if you were t be buying the item you are selling, and attempt to answer all of those questions in your ad.
2) Since it's worth a thousand words, always include a picture. It doesn't matter how "standard" the item is, an ad with a picture will always sell the item faster. Also, make sure it's a picture you have taken of the item, not some stock photo from a catalog or manufacturer's web page. Stock photos make it seem like you don't really have the item in your possession.
3) Be honest about the condition of the item. If you say something is "like new" and a buyer shows only to find that it's anything but "like new", you are not going to make the sale, and you are going to have a cranky customer on your hands. You'll be wasting your time and the time of the person who came out to look at your item.
4) Price your item correctly. You can look at past ads to see what people have been asking for similar items. You don't want your price to seem out of the ordinary. If it's too high, people will just buy the cheaper ones and your item won't sell. If it's too low, you'll be losing money on the deal.
5) You will get lots of responses but most of them will be dead-ends. That's the nature of the beast, don't let it get your down, and don't get too excited when someone sends an email saying they are interested. Keep an even head.
6) Only deal with people who are local to you. Don't get involved in deals with people who want the item shipped to them with payment happening in some "creative" manner.
7) Only deal in cash. No checks, no cashier checks, no trades, just cash. If you do anything else, you will eventually get ripped off.
8) Most buyers will attempt to barter. Be prepared for that ahead of time and determine ahead of time exactly how much you are will to let your item go for.
9) Once your item has sold, take the down your ad.
