Using a wading stick to cross streams and creeks
If you are going to use a wading stick to cross a fast-moving stream or crick, here are some tips that will help keep you from ending up in the drink.
1. The wading stick provides a third point of contact... the other two being your feet. Make sure that you always have two points of contact that are secure. That means only move one foot at a time, and only move the wading stick when both feet are secure.
2. Hold the wading stick in your upstream hand. This way if you drop it, you'll have a chance to grab it as it moves towards you. Also, if you slip, the current will tend to push you upright again as opposed to pushing you down... and in.
