Mac users have it made, with Preview able to display PDF files, there's no need to install any Adobe software to read PDF files. For the rest of us, there is the pain that is Adobe software. If you are looking for a light-weight solution to reading PDF files so that you can ditch the Adobe software on your machine, look no further than Foxit Reader. It's a better PDF reader than Adobe's at about 15% of the size.

Foxit reader is free. It runs on windows boxes, Linux machines, and they even have a version for mobile devices.
