Always raise or fold if you are first to act pre-flop

If you are the first to act before the flop, you either need to raise or get out of the hand. Trying to limp in from this position will almost always lead to a raise from another player. If you don't have a hand worth raising, don't play it.

Yeah, even if I have a hand worth raising, I still sometimes try to limp in. If you limp in, great. If not, you can still call the raise. Now you know who has the "raising" hand, and they don't know that you do. You can sometimes surprise people pretty well with this play if you get a flop that works for your hand. But if not, get out as soon as the pre-flop raiser bets.
