Apple has released a firmware update for the 3G iPhone that is supposed to improve the problems with call quality, dropped calls, and slow connectivity when using the 3G network. Apple's been really mum on this whole subject. The only thing they say about the update is that it offers "improved communication with 3G networks." Real helpful. But anyway, if you've been having connectivity issues with your 3G iPhone, you'll want to update as soon as possible.
