Cutting a bolt without damaging the threads

If you want to cut a bolt without damaging the the threads, screw a nut onto the bolt before you cut it. Once you cut the bolt, screw the nut off. As the nut goes over the area of the threads that are damaged, it will repair them as it moves (so long as you have really hacked the threads into nothing).
