temporarily turn off auto-indent

In JEdit I have the feature turned on that auto-indents lines so that I don't need to keep tabbing over for every new line. I noticed a cool trick that allows this to be turned off temporarily. Just hold down the Shift key when you hit the return key and the new line will *not* auto indent. As soon as you let up the Shift key, the auto indenting is back on. I know a lot of programs have auto indenting, don't know if they support this use of the SHift key too.
