Transparency display in GIMP
Like most image process programs, GIMP uses a checkerboard of white and gray squares to indicate transparency. But there are times when this pattern can interfere with details you are trying to see in your image. When this happens, don't worry cause GIMP allows you to adjust the way that transparency is indicated in your images.
Get to your preferences and select the Display panel. You can then adjust the entry called Check style as shown here:
Adjusting transparency display options in GIMP
The entries here allow you to adjust the relative darkness of the check grid. Or if that doesn't work for you, you can choose to show transparency as solid white, black, or gray.
If you are showing checks, there is also an entry right below this called Check size that allows you to adjust the size of the squares used in the grid.
By adjusting these settings in GIMP, you can always find a way to adjust the transparency so that it does not interfere with your being able to see your image
