With the latest version of iTunes (7.7), I've noticed that I sometimes have issues with the controls working when iTunes in it's small view. For example, if music is playing and I push the pause button, the music keeps playing. I'm not sure why this is happening, but I've found a quick fix. Just maximize iTunes again, hit a control, and then minimize it again and the controls will be working again in the minimized state.
