How to approach a new dog

Most people's natural reaction when they approach a dog is to try and pet them on top of the head. This is bad. This is considered an aggressive behavior by some dogs, and some of them may act aggressively in return. The safest way to pet a new dog is under the chin. This is a non-aggressive movement to dogs, and most dogs also find it comforting.

Yeah, good advice. But you missed the most obvious trick: always ask the owner if you can pet their dog first. If he's a biter, they'll know.

Very good advice. You could also choose to pet a cat instead.
