Watering lawn in intervals

Watering the lawn is easier said than done, since no one really knows how many times or how long one should water in a given week. One inch of water a week is what I read in many sources. However what about watering efficiently? Watering in intervals helps prevent run-off and always the grass to absorb all the water.
