Sticking sliding glass door

With the return of summer comes the return of using sliding glass doors to get to patios and decks. If you find that after sitting all winter your sliding glass door is now sticking, here's what you need to do to adjust it so that it does not stick.

Just about every sliding glass door has a single adjustment screw on the bottom edge of the section that slides. It's usually on the side of the door that opens. Once you find the adjustment screw, look at the top edge of the door from the outside. It should be flat. If the edge where the screw lives is high, you'll need to adjust the door by turning the screw counter-clockwise. If the edge with the screw is low, you'll need to adjust the door by turning the screw clockwise; in this case it sometimes helps to have a pry bar to lift the door up before you try to turn the screw.

Once you know which way to go, adjust the screw until the sliding glass door looks even and it slides smoothly. If after adjustment it still feels a little sticky, try cleaning out the track and apply a light lubricant to grease the skids.
