Applying paste floatant to a fly
Applying paste floatant to a fly correctly is very important. If you apply too much or too little, the fly will sink and be of no use to you. Here's how to apply the correct amount of floatant every time.
1] Squeeze a small ribbon of paste floatant onto your index finger. For size 18 & smaller flies, use a ribbon 1/8" long, for larger flies use 1/4".
2] Rub the floatant between your thumb and index finger until it liquefies.
3] Apply the floatant onto the wings, hackle, and tail by pulling them between your thumb and index finger from their base to their tips. If the tips stick together, you are applying too much, so lighten your pressure.
4] Squeeze the remainder of the floatant into the body of the fly being careful not to smash the hackles or wing. If you want the tippet to float too, pull the tippet of the leader through your fingers.
