Testing for air leaks to save energy
In most homes, a lot of heat is lost due to air leaks. Most people realize that this is an issue around doors and windows. But there are some less obvious places where these air leaks can occur:
- Around wall outlets
- Around light fixtures in the ceiling
- Around attic hatches
To test for air leaks, light an incense stick and hold it near the area where you are testing. The incense will release a faint wisp of smoke and if there are leaks, you will see it affect the smoke.
To save energy, replace or add weatherstripping around doors and windows as needed. For leaks in other places, you can use expanding (or non-expanding) weather stripping foam which is available at any home improvement center.
