Clear Vista Memory Cache

If your Vista computer is feeling a little sluggish after being up for a while, a thing that sometimes helps is clearly the memory cache. This helps free up unused RAM, and having more available RAM can make your computer faster. For me, I keep a shortcut to this command on my desktop so that whenever I need it, it's just a click away.

To create this shortcut right click your mouse on an empty area of your desktop and select New -> Shortcut. When you are asked for the location of the shortcut, enter the following:

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

then click Next. You can then assign a name and an icon to the shortcut. Next time your computer feels slow, click on this icon to free up available memory and hopefully your computer will be faster afterwards.

It doesn't work for me. After I set up the icon, double click on it, check Task Manager again, nothing.

Worked exactly as advertized. Cut my memory usage from 53%to 29% as indicated by the Sidebar Multi Meter.

Didn't work for me. The amount of free memory I had prior to running this was 41%. The amount of free memory I had AFTER running this dropped down to 0% and my Vista laptop froze.

No effect on my desktop (HP Pressario w/ Vista Home Basic) Memory usage at 65% stayed at 65% after "run as administrator" on this shortcut.

This does not clear the "memory" but it clears temporary storage on the hard drive and runs a defrag process. Does not do what it says it does.

Just so i get this straight, when i double click on the icon do i have to expect some sort of window, or does it just automatically do it?

Because when i double clicked it i did notice a speed improvement, but im just wondering. Thanks.

My lappy's been running for days on-end now, couldn't start up my 2moons, used this to clear the cache, and walla, my 2moons work.

A hoax. Do not bother

This tip seems to ignore the more useful tip of merely re-booting and/or running disk clean. Obliviously this is more of a 'tips blog' as opposed to 'tips forum' as moderation appears not to be on-going, ref. un-dated posts (otherwise essential for determining
usefulness), not to mention outdated posts as well as poorly or inaccurately posted tips.

Works like it should - the more apps that close allows for more return of ram - nice hint

Vista's prefretch actually works well, if you didn't notice.
