how to catch live animals in the house
rabbit:
Easy. They hop for awhile and freeze, hoping you won't see them. It'll be less stressful for them if you don't grab them, so I put a garbage can on its side and gently push against them until they lift their legs and you can slide it under them. Then, set the garbage can upright, gently, and put your hand over it so they don't try to hop out. Take outside and release.
mouse:
quick and elusive, your only chance is if they're in a room with no place to go. Take a hockey stick (a broom works too, but you have to be careful not to stab them) and a smooth-sided plastic garbage can with a square top. Chase the mouse into a corner or against a wall. Put the garbage can on its side and smoothly move it toward the mouse with your foot. Thwart the little guy's efforts to flee to open space with the hockey stick. After a few attempts, the mouse will usually choose to run into this nice dark garbage can. Lift it up and you can safely take the can outside. If you jiggle it a little as you walk, the mouse won't be able to climb up the sides and up your arm.
bird:
They'll fly to windows. Open the windows and remove the screens. If they persist in banging their heads against windows that can't open, then get the garbage can out again. In this case, a white one that allows enough light through that it doesn't appear to be a tunnel works better. Trap them from the bottom, then move the can up to the ceiling, then slide a lid between the ceiling and the can opening. Run outside fast. Point the opening away from your face at a 15-30 degree angle, remove the lid, and watch them fly away.
bird, humming:
same as above, but trap them from the top. They prefer to fly up, so you can sometimes get them to fly into a translucent can. They are quick little devils. I've had to wait until they are nearly exhausted.
lizard:
Dunno. You get a lizard in the house, you live with it.
wasp:
They fly upward. You can steer them into a cup and stick a plate over it.
