Deleting words from your Mac Dictionary

We've all done it... you're zipping through a document correcting spelling mistakes and you accidentally hit the "Learn" button for a word that is misspelled. Now that incorrect spelling is in your dictionary, and it'll no longer be caught when you check your documents. Doh! What to do?

If you did this using an application that makes use of the Mac's built-in dictionary, there are two ways to fix this.

First, if you remember the spelling of the word that you mistakenly added to your dictionary, from the application where you made the mistake bring up the spelling dialog by going to "Edit" -> "Spelling" -> "Spelling" from the menu. You can then type in the misspelled word and once you do, there will be a "Forget" button that you can click. Just like that the misspelled word is removed from your Dictionary.

Second, if you can't remember the exact spelling of the word, you can edit the dictionary file directly using any text editor. Open your text editor of choice and navigate to the "Library/Spelling" directory under your Home directory. In the Spelling directory will be file (possibly just one), one for each language you use. If you speak English, the name of the file will be "en". You can open this file and it will show all of the words you have added to the dictionary. Just find the word that was mistakenly added to the dictionary, delete it, and save the file and it will be removed from your Dictionary.
