keeping nails from splitting wood
If you your wood is splitting when you nail into it, there are two ways you can go to keep this from happening.
The first is to pre-drill holes in the wood. This is a bit of a pain, but if you are nailing into hard wood, this is pretty much your only choice. I usually drill the hole about 1/8" less than the size of the nail.
If you are nailing into softer wood, you may be able to keep the wood from splitting by dulling the tip of the nail before you use it. Just bang each nail into something hard (concrete, metal, etc) to dull the tip, and then use it as you normally would.
