considering an iPhone?
If you are considering buying a new iPhone, you may want to hold off on that purchase. Rumors are rampant that a "3G" version of the iPhone will be out in several months, perhaps as early as June 2008. These rumors carry a lot of weight since they are coming from the mouth of the guy who runs AT&T's mobility division. If he doesn't have it right, I don't know who would.
So what does this mean to the perspective iPhone purchaser? One of the main complaints about the iPhone is the speed. Or the lack thereof; it's slow. Converting to the "3G" network will solve this problem and give users speeds approaching broadband in their home. If you feel the speed is an issue for you, you should probably hold off on buying an iPhone unless cost is also an issue. It's entirely possible that Apple will continue to sell the current iPhone at a reduced cost, or sell the "3G" iPhone at an increased cost.
But if a couple $100 is not an issue, but speed is, you'll definitely want to hold off on purchasing an iPhone until the "3G" model is available.
