It won't work.
On vista I'm always asked for a username and pasword when i try to go to my Mac!!!

Yeah... so am I. I then enter the username and password on my Mac and it works.
– Added by an anonymous user on May 09, 2007 at 7:39 pm
Thats the purpose. If you don't do this, you will never be able to authenticate
– Added by an anonymous user on May 13, 2007 at 12:26 pm
It keeps asking for the username and password again and again, and never get through
– Added by an anonymous user on Jun 24, 2007 at 1:57 am
Are you sure you are entering the correct user name and password? You need to give the user name and password for the Mac you are trying to get to, not the computer you are currently on.

it appears that you need more than the username - you need to add the MacIPAddress something like: 192.168.1.27\username - that finally worked for me. Now the question is how to get from the iMac to the Vista PC!
– Added by an anonymous user on Jul 02, 2007 at 7:08 pm
I am able to access the Mac using the IPAddress etc but, I am unable to access the PC from the Mac... It is asking me for a password that I have never had and didn't need at one time. Something has changed on one end or the other and I don't know what it is.

1. Click Windows Visa Start Orb
2. In search box, type "regedit" and return
3. Once regedit opens, click File -> export to make a backup copy
4. Navigate to Computer HKEYLOCALMACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Lsa.
5. In the right pane, right-click the "LmCompatibilityLevel" key and select "modify"
6. Change the value from 3 to 1
7. Exit regedit and you should now be able to properly authenticate to your Mac OS X (or other Samba) share.

in leopard, open finder, click on go, then click on connect to server, then type in smb://ipaddressofpc, where ipaddressofpc is the ip address of the pc. you have to type in user name of the pc, and your password. not sure if you can do this if your pc does not have a password, but you definitely will have to know the username of the pc, and type this in. also need to make sure in mac that the system preferences, sharing has smb enabled.

Thank you, your suggestions worked for me too.
It has taken me weeks to get this to work. Than you again. :)

it works, just make sure you use the Username and not the account name, which is all that was required in XP/98...and it is case-sensitive
