Getting a free look at the river card in Texas hold'em
Here's an interesting situation that comes up with some regularity in Texas Hold'em. Let's say you are in the late position (last to act in the betting) and after the flop you are on a draw--either a flush draw, straight draw or both. Now if this happens and the betting on the flop is checked to you, you may be tempted to check and get a free look at the turn card. Don't. You want to make a smallish bet and here's why. This make it far more likely that on the turn, your opponents will check to you. At this point, if you hit your draw, you can bet the pot. But if you didn't, you now get a free look at the river card which is far more valuable than a free look at the turn since your odds are much worse after the turn if you didn't hit.
This move will save you money in the long-term (which is what poker is all about) if you do not improve and will reward you with profit if you hit. There are times when this move can have some unintended consequences though. Mainly, you bet the flop and someone else raises. But at that point since you made a smallish bet, it's relatively cheap to get out of the pot. And if the raise is small, you may want to call it anyways as you now have additional information on an opponent.
