free directory service for your phone

You can get free directory service for looking up phone numbers by calling 1-800-FREE411. It's a little slower and more annoying than the usual directory service since it's got ads. But my provider charges a dollar per directory service call, so it's usually worth the minor inconvenience.

Google is now offering a free directory service too. The number is 1-800-GOOG-411. You can read all about it at their site: http://labs.google.com/goog411/index.html
