Define your product's audience before you market.
I have consulted with several independent producers of music and film. Many of them don't understand why they cannot get any traction in the mass market. I would suggest that they haven't made the choice whether they want to be a mass market product or stick with their niche market. Unfortunately, very few products have the ability to crossover from the niche to the mass market because the artist has not or does not want to choose that direction. It's not often that you can have it both ways.
Celebrate any success you have regardless of the audience that you chosen (either with purpose, or on accident). It is much easier to build momentum when you are already moving the product in some direction.
