Have someone else read your resume before you send it out

Never, ever, ever send out a resume without having someone else look at it first. While spell checkers will ensure that you don't have typos, they are not as good at checking grammer. In addition, if you misspell a word in a way that makes another word (using there instead of their for example), this will not be caught. Nothing will result in your resume ending up in the "circular file" quicker than obvious errors in its preparation.

And one of the most common word substitutions as mentioned above is incorrectly using "lead" instead of "led" when you are referring to an effort which you led (past tense).

i.e. "Lead team which increased sales 20%"
