Outlook and Windows Mail Always asking for a Password

If you are using Vista and you are having a problem with Outlook, or Windows Mail, where it keeps asking you for your password even when you check the box to remember your password, here's a potential (it worked for me) fix for this problem.

First, close Outlook or Windows Mail, whichever it is that you are using that is giving you the problem.

Second, open up a Windows Explorer window. Paste the following into the address bar: %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Protect

Third, this should bring you to a folder in Windows Explorer that has a single folder in it. The name of this folder will be very long and it will be full of random characters.

Fourth, rename the name of this vary long folder by appending something to it. Anything will do, I used .old

Fifth, you should now be able to reopen Outlook or Windows Mail. It will probably ask for your password again. But so long as you check the box that says to remember your password, it should only ask for your password this once.

It didn't work for me, but what I did was delete (to recycle bin) the parent Protect folder, did the multiple confirmations, then restarted Windows Mail. It creates a new Protect folder. Windows mail asked for the password and that time it finally remembered it.
