What to do when your car overheats
If your car overheats, you need to be very careful to make sure that the temperature of your engine doesn't get too high. If it does, you could blow your head gasket and warp your engine. Both of these will result in costly repairs.
One thing you can try doing if your car overheats is to turn on the interior heater. Put it on the highest heat setting with the fan turned up as high as it will go. Then check to see if heat is coming out. If not, you need to turn off your car immediately since this indicates that your cooling system is not working at all and the heating is only going to get worse.
If heat does come out of the heater, you may be able to continue running your car, but you'll need to keep a close eye on the temperature gauge. Try letting your car idle with the heater cranked. If this reduces the engine temperature, you may be able to drive a short distance, and keep repeating this procedure until you manage to get some place where you can get your car repaired. But if you do this, make sure you pay careful attention to your temperature gauge. If your car overheats too badly, costly engine repairs will be in your future.
