How to properly store comic books
If you are buying comics books as a collector, it is imperative that your comic books be stored correctly. If you fail to store your comic books correctly, they are far more likely to be damaged and this will greatly reduce their value as collectibles. Here are tips on how to correctly store comic books.
- Always store your comic books in a specially-made comic book storage bag. There are two of comic books storage bags: clear polypropylene and polyethylene plastic. Clear polypropylene bags are a bit thicker and aren’t quite as slippery as the ones made of polyethylene. I like the thickness of the polypropylene bags, but overall I prefer the polyethylene bags because they are more slippery--this makes them easier to slide in and out of your storage bin, and this results in less wear on you comic books. Whatever type of bag you decide to use make sure they are acid-free as acids damage your comic books very quickly.
- Always store you comic books using a backing board, with the backing board being placed in the bag with the comic. Place the backing board in the bag first, then slide the comic book in the bag with the back of the comic book against the shiny side of the backing board and the front of the comic against the inside of the bag. NEVER put the backing board in the comic book, this will warp the spine of your comic books and greatly reduce their value.
- There are three different sizes of comic books, Golden Age, Silver Age, and Current. The comic book storage bags and backing boards are sized the same way. Make sure you store your comic books using bags and backing boards that match the size of the comic. If you use the wrong size bag or backing board, your comic books will be damaged as a result.
- Always keep your bagged and boarded comic books in a comic storage box. Comic book storage boxes are made of cardboard and they come with a cardboard lid. They will keep dust and light away from your comic books, both of which can ruin your comics. Do not overstuff your comic book storage boxes. If you do, it will crush and bend the comic books at the ends of the box. It will also make it harder to get comics into the box, which will likely lead to comics being harmed while you are trying to stuff them in. Keep the boxes full to keep your comic books from sliding around and getting damaged, but you should still be able to easily slide comics into and out of the box. If not, it's too full.
