There's a bunch of sites that can remember birthdays and other notable events for you and send you a reminder or warning email.
I like the web-based ones because you don't lose all that data when you switch computers like you can with Outlook and the equivalent. Also, most of them allow you to send messages to people so that they enter their data for you. Here's one of them; dunno if it's any better than others.
