Changing the Windows logon screen saver
The screen saver that is used when the Windows logon screen is shown can not be configured using the usual screen saver configuration screen. But you can make some edits in the registry to edit the behavior of this screen saver which allow you to alter the screen saver that is used, change the timeout used, and turn it off altogether.
To start, you need to get into the registery editor. Do this by going to the Start menu, selecting Run, and entering "regedit" (without the quotes) and hitting Enter. Once the registry editor is open, navigate to the "HKEY_USERS \ .DEFAULT \ Control Panel \ Desktop" in the left most panel. Once you are in the Desktop folder, switch the right panel on the screen and scroll down. There are three entries there that control the screen saver on the login screen.
"ScreenSaveActive" can be used to turn off the logon screen saver. If you want to change this behavior, double click on the row and change the entry. A value of "1" means that the screen saver is turned on. If you set this to "0" there will be no screen saver on the logon screen.
"ScreenSaveTimeOut" is used to set the number of seconds of inactivity that have to occur before the screen saver turns on. The default is 600 (10 minutes). You can double click on this entry and change the value to change the amount of time that elapses before the logon screen saver starts.
"SCRNSAVE.EXE" is the name of the screen saver executable. By changing this, you can completely change the screen saver that is used on your logon screen. This is a fun change to make since it'll baffle everyone as to how you managed to do it. You must enter the complete path and name to the executable file for your screen saver.
