Running custom applications on the iPhone

I haven't tried this yet myself, but this site claims to describe how you can hack your iPhone so that you can get access to the file system, install SSH clients, and start running custom applications. It looks rather involved, and I'm guessing it'll void the warranty. Has anybody actually tried this and, if so, did it work?
