If fruit flies are invading your kitchen, here's a trick to help get rid of them that is non-toxic. Boil a big pot of water on the stove and once it gets boiling, carefully pour the water down the sink. Fruit flies love to breed in drains (they like moist areas) and pouring the boiling water down the drain will kill them. You'll probably still have some fruit flies afterwards since they don't all breed in the drain, but this usually knocks their numbers down to an acceptable level for me.
